Get whisked away with our dreamy guide to romantic getaways in Charleston, South Carolina, where we reveal the most romantic hotels in The Holy City! From boutique stays to charming bed and breakfasts, accommodation with spa services, and hotels with rooftop bars, there is no shortage of Southern hospitality in this city.
I’ll also include our favorite things to do for couples – tried and tested by my partner and me.
Charleston Romantic Getaways and Hotel
The Mills House (115 Meeting St) has been welcoming guests since 1853, and some of its 218 rooms offer city views.
Rooms start at 275 sq ft and feature air conditioning, a 55-inch flat-screen TV, and access to the outdoor pool.
There are three tastefully decorated culinary experiences onsite, including the airy terrace for sundown drinks.
You really can’t beat this location for first-time visits to Charleston as it’s steps away from some of the most rated restaurants, such as Husk, Poogan’s Porch, and Queen 82, which I personally found very romantic with its courtyard dining.
It is also the closest hotel to the mansions on Meeting and Kings Street, which have information plaques telling you more about the history and architecture of each.
Check the availability of the Mills House on Booking.
Note: As with all of the accommodations included in our list of romantic places to stay in Charleston, parking is available for a fee; parking is limited in the city, so it is recommended to organize it before you arrive.
As the name suggests, HarbourView Inn (2 Vendue Range) is perfectly located by Charleston’s Waterfront Park, which features the iconic Pineapple Fountain and leads to The Battery with its historic multi-million dollar mansions.
The only waterfront luxury hotel offers rooms starting at 365 sq ft that feature air conditioning, a 49-inch flatscreen TV, and a small refrigerator.
Couples love the rustic vibes of the rooftop bar that offers panoramic views of the city, plus the cheese and wine reception held there every day.
Andrew Pinckney Inn
Andrew Pinckney Inn (40 Pinckney St) is situated in a great location near City Market, where you will find bars I really enjoyed, such as the low-lit Church and Union (image below) and the sunny Hyman’s Seafood’s rooftop bar.
Built in 1858, rooms start at 172 sq ft and feature air conditioning, a flat-screen HDTV, a Keurig coffee maker, and Gilchrist & Soames bath items; the hotel really does provide first-class amenities.
Guests love the daily continental breakfast served on the hotel’s rooftop solarium, where afternoon wine and cheese are also served!
Couples who don’t want to interrupt their fitness routine can use a local gym complimentary as guests of Andrew Pinckney.
The Charleston Place
If you prefer independent accommodation free from any chain branding, The Charleston Place (205 Meeting St) is a historic hotel that first opened its doors in 1986.
Rooms range from double to suite and feature air conditioning, a flatscreen TV, and some have balconies.
Give your partner the ultimate self-care gift by booking an appointment at the hotel’s spa, which offers treatments for massage, skincare, and manicures.
Or, set aside time for the pair of you to try out the sauna, jacuzzi, indoor and outdoor pool!
Dine at one of the hotel’s six restaurants or reserve a table at King Street or the French Quarter, located just blocks away.
The Spectator Hotel
The award-winning The Spectator Hotel offers a rose petal turndown and a butler breakfast service for extra special stays.
The hotel has 41 rooms starting at 360 sq ft that feature air conditioning, a flat-screen TV with cable, and some have private balconies.
It’s not just the accommodation that is nationally recognized; The Bar has also received the title as one of the top five bars and serves Prohibition-era-inspired drinks.
If you choose The Spectator for your romantic weekend in Charleston, make time for a drink and/or cake at the late-night Carmella’s dessert shop nearby!
French Quarter Inn
Another popular Charleston romantic getaway hotel is the multi-award-winning luxurious French Quarter Inn (166 Church St) for its elegant decor and central location.
Guests are spoiled with a champagne arrival, sweet tea and snacks in the lobby, and a complimentary continental breakfast.
Rooms start at 370 sq ft and feature air conditioning, a 40-inch flat-screen TV, a mini refrigerator, and a menu pillow for maximum comfort.
The inn is close to St. Philip Episcopal Church and King Street, where you will find restaurants and stores, plus the 2nd Sunday Market.
Check availability at Booking.
The Ryder (237 Meeting St) is a very trendy hotel providing a ready-made backdrop for a couples photography shoot!
There are 91 stylish rooms with calming aesthetics, starting at 160 sq ft, and feature air conditioning and a flat-screen LCD TV.
Couples really enjoy the outdoor pool and Little Palm Cafe.
The Ryder is less than a 15-minute walk to Charleston’s main attractions and photo spots, such as the Pink House Gallery, Old Slave Mart Museum, and Gibbes Museum of Art.
Grand Bohemian Hotel Charleston, Autograph Collection
The Grand Bohemian Hotel Charleston (55 Wentworth St) lives up to its name with opulent decor such as chandeliers and velour.
The hotel has 50 rooms starting at 400 sq ft that feature air conditioning, a flat-screen cable TV, and a desk.
Guests enjoy the ambiance, hip rooftop bar with a fire pit, fitness suite, and the art gallery that is located on the premises.
The Grand Bohemian is located near the French Quarter Inn and shares all of the central attractions; plus, it is a 15-minute walk to the colorful Rainbow Row, Waterfront Pier Park, and Pineapple Fountain.
Hotel Bella Grace
For contemporary accommodation with modern amenities that are located in an 1830 mansion, consider the Hotel Bella Grace (117 Calhoun St).
Suites are specifically designed for visitors looking to spend longer in the city, with home-away-from-home facilities such as microwaves and refrigerators.
Hotel Bella Grace is one of the rare pet-friendly hotels for couples in Charleston; one dog is permitted per stay, and a fee is charged.
The hotel has its own Delaney Oyster House and is a couple of blocks from Marion Square and the trendy Upper King Street restaurants.
Francis Marion Hotel
Stay in one of the registered Historic Hotels of America by reserving a room at the Francis Marion Hotel (387 King St), which was built in 1924.
The hotel has 234 rooms starting at 250 sq ft that feature air conditioning, a flat-screen TV with cable, and a custom-made vanity.
Guests love the onsite spa, which offers couple services.
Parking is available at the multistory garage across from the hotel.
Francis Marion Hotel is located at Marion Square near the Mace Brown Museum of Natural History.
It is also close to some cool dive bars, such as Big Gun (I highly recommend the burgers) and Burns Tavern.
Francis Marion is also featured in our guide to boutique hotels.
Hotel Bennett (404 King St) is the pink hotel you’ve probably seen on social media!
The room in question is Camellias, a unique dining experience that both guests and visitors can take advantage of.
The hotel has 179 rooms starting at 365 sq ft that feature air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and soundproofing so you won’t hear other guests.
Customers love the little touches like the Nespresso machine and hotel amenities such as the fitness suite, spa, and, most importantly, the stunning rooftop pool area.
While there is little reason for couples actually to leave Hotel Bennett during their romantic getaway to Charleston, the accommodation is within walking distance to the cool Upper King Street for bars and restaurants.
I’ve earmarked this area for a return visit to Charleston.
86 Cannon District Inn
86 Cannon District Inn (86 Cannon St) is one of the most romantic hotels in Charleston for parents looking to escape any sign of kids, as it is adult-only!
The three-story 1860s single house offers five kings and suites featuring elegant decor, air conditioning, a flat-screen TV with cable channels, a coffee machine, and use of free bikes.
Location-wise, 86 Cannon District Inn is a couple of blocks away from an independent cafe and bagel shop; however, guests do rate the breakfast served at the inn.
