Where to Go Camping in Provincetown and the Outer + Lower Cape

If you’re hoping to go camping in Provincetown over the summer, you’ll want to book as early as possible! There aren’t a lot of options for campgrounds right in Ptown, although there are plenty if you’re willing to be elsewhere on the Outer Cape or even as far as Brewster in the Lower Cape. Unless you’re roughing it, you probably won’t be taking any of the ferries to Provincetown; they’re all pedestrian-only so you can’t bring a car.

There are plenty of other options for getting from Boston to the Cape, just keep in mind the summer traffic.

Campgrounds in Provincetown, MA

Dunes’ Edge Campground

There aren’t too many campgrounds in Provincetown proper, but you won’t want to miss this one!

Dunes’ Edge Campground is the perfect combination of forests and beaches.

Nestled between high dunes and sprawling pine forests, you’ll find a bit of everything at this Provincetown campground.

Cabins as well as both RV and tent sites are all available.

They also have rustic bungalows available with bunk beds so you can skip the tent and mattress and just bring your bedding.

Dunes’ Edge is open from late spring to early fall, and reserving a spot is super easy!

Make sure you book well in advance, especially during the summer months.

The campground can be found right after Mile Marker 116 on Route 6 in Provincetown.

Coastal Acres Campground

For anyone hoping to camp within walking distance of downtown Provincetown, Coastal Acres Campground (76R Bayberry Ave) is a great place to go.

With a mix of trailer and tent sites, electric and water hookups, and on-site bathrooms, this campground has everything you need for your stay.

And, if you’re working remotely, they have free high-speed Wi-Fi!

Pets are welcome, though you should check the site for important policies if you have more than one furry friend.

The best features of the campground are the bike trails leading to the nearby national seashore beaches.

With such great access, this is an amazing campground in Provincetown.

Camping Near Provincetown

North Truro Campground & RV

While there aren’t so many opportunities for camping in Provincetown city limits, there are tons of campgrounds on your way to or from your Ptown adventures.

Make sure you visit North Truro Campground & RV (46 Highland Rd), also known as Adventure Bound Camping Resort.

Located just an 11-minute drive from Provincetown, this campground offers incredible beach access and secluded campsites.

You’ll love the clean facilities, electric and water hookups, and free Wi-Fi for tent and RV campers alike.

They also have rustic, primitive sites without any hookups close to the pine forests if you’re looking for a more off-the-grid experience.

Explore the walking and biking trails, or walk about 20 minutes to spend the day at Coast Guard Beach!

North of Highland Camping Area

One more North Truro campground of note: North of Highland Campground Area (52 Head of the Meadow Rd), or Head of the Meadow Campground.

This picturesque area is just a 10-minute drive from Provincetown.

It’s situated within 60 acres of pine trees in the Cape Cod National Seashore; stop into the National Parks Service museum en route to the campground if you want to learn more about the National Seashore ecosystem and history.

Walk a few steps to Head of the Meadow Beach or bike along the two-mile Head of the Meadow Bike Trail, which begins less than half a mile from the camping area.

Horton’s Camping Resort

Just one town over in Truro, Horton’s Camping Resort (71 South Highland Rd) is a no-frills campground with RV and tent campsites.

This campground is located about 11 minutes from Provincetown by car.

You’ll find a mix of small and spacious campsites at Horton’s, which is an important detail if you have an RV, so make sure you indicate your needs or preferences when booking.

A 20-minute walk to the beach or a 10-minute walk to the Highland Golf Course, the Highland Lighthouse, the Truro Historical Museum, and a beautiful bike path are some of the highlights of Horton’s location.

There is also a public bus that will take you to P-town if you don’t want to bother with parking!

Wellfleet Hollow State Campground

If you are looking for something a bit more ‘off-the-grid,’ you’ll love the Wellfleet Hollow State Campground (180 Old Kings Highway).

Located only a 20-minute drive away in Wellfleet, this is some of the best camping near Provincetown.

It is a tent-only campground, which means they won’t accommodate RVs, trailers, or even 5th-wheels.

Some of the 108 campsites have 20 amp electric hookups, and there are a few ‘comfort stations’ with flushing toilets, outdoor showers, and a washing station.

Note that only one comfort station is wheelchair accessible.

This site is perfect for outdoor adventurers as a home base for exploring the national seashore beaches, Duck Pond, marshes, and the Rail Trail.

Reservations can be made months in advance, so make sure you plan ahead!

Maurice’s Campground

A beautiful, family-owned camping experience, Maurice’s Campground (80 State Highway 6 Alternate #1) is a perfect place for families big and small.

Also located in Wellfleet, Maurice’s is just a 25-minute drive from Provincetown.

You’ll be able to explore all that Wellfleet has to offer while being just a short trip to the fun in P-town!

The Wellfleet Drive-In is always a local favorite that you won’t want to miss.

The best part about Maurice’s Campground is the variety of lodging sites.

Pick a tent site, a trailer site with multiple hookups, a cabin, or a cottage, and enjoy the incredible accommodations that come with each option.

Note that there are no pets or campfires allowed at Maurice’s.

Atlantic Oaks RV Resort

One more campground located a short drive from Provincetown is Atlantic Oaks (3700 State Highway 6).

Located in Eastham, Atlantic Oaks is about 25 minutes from P-town.

This is a modern campground tailored specifically to RV lovers—enjoy spacious sites, full hookups, and even cable TV!

Experience the glamorous side of camping with private hot showers, free Wi-Fi, laundry, parks and playgrounds, and more.

The Cape Cod Rail Trail brushes the edge of the campground, giving you super easy access by bike to both bay and ocean beaches.

The campground is 2.5 miles from the National Seashore and 1.5 miles from the bay beaches, which makes for the perfect day trip by bike, or a minutes-long drive by car.

Camp in Cape Cod on Your Way to Provincetown

The following campsites are perfect for the traveler on either end of their visit to Provincetown.

Each of these is 30 minutes to an hour outside of P-town, but they are definitely worth checking out if you fall in love with Cape Cod and want to explore more!

Nickerson State Park

With more than 400 campgrounds and a sprawling 2,000 acres at your disposal, you could spend your entire Cape Cod vacation at Nickerson State Park (3488 Main St) in Brewster.

Nickerson is a 38-minute drive from Provincetown, so it could be a perfect overnight rest stop, or a weekend trip if you plan on staying in P-town for a week or more.

Enjoy bike trails, swim in any of the eight freshwater ponds, and hike through tall stands of pine and oak trees.

You can choose to stay at a traditional ground campsite, standard sites, and yurts, which are cabin-like tents that feature bunk beds, water access, and some electricity.

There are seven camping areas in total, and each features comfort stations with showers and flushing toilets.

Note that only Areas 1-5 are wheelchair accessible.

Though walk-ins are not permitted, you may be able to make a same-day reservation.

Shady Knoll Campground

Less than two miles from Nickerson State Park is Shady Knoll Campground (1709 Main St), also in Brewster.

The campground is about a 45-minute drive to Provincetown, which means you can spend a day in this popular town as often as you’d like during your stay at Shady Knoll.

There are tent- and RV-friendly sites with clean bathrooms, free Wi-Fi and hot showers, laundry, and a playground.

Each site is also equipped with a fire pit with an attachable grill.

The camp store also features a game room!

This will absolutely be one of your favorite nearby options if none of the campgrounds in Provincetown catch your eye!

Sweetwater Forest Cape Cod Family Campground

Another notable campground in Brewster is the Sweetwater Forest Family Campground (676 Harwich Rd).

With 80 acres of Cape Cod forests and more than 250 campsites, this is a beautiful campground near Provincetown.

Just over 45 minutes by car to Ptown, the Sweetwater campsites are perfect for families who are ready for tons of action!

With dozens of recreational activities on their weekly schedules, Sweetwater is suited to kids of all ages.

Mini-golf, ice cream socials, canoe rentals, video arcades and more are waiting for you at this family campground.

And, with Ptown in easy reach, you can plan plenty of fun day trips around the Outer Cape, too!
